How to choose the right bathroom vanity – a guide from Stonewood
Choosing a bathroom vanity affects more than how the room looks. It also affects how easy the vanity is to use, how well it lasts and how it works for you every day. At Stonewood we make our vanities with careful joinery, so we know exactly what to look for – and what to avoid.
1. Start with the right question: wall-hung or floor-standing?
Choosing between a wall-hung and a floor-standing vanity changes the overall feel of the room:
- A wall-hung vanity gives a clean, modern, light look. It makes cleaning easier and suits small rooms or a minimalist design.
- A floor-standing vanity looks solid and present. It is a good choice for larger bathrooms, or if you prefer a classic, practical look.
At Stonewood most models can be made either way. In some cases a wall-hung vanity can also stand on the floor, on matching legs.
2. Materials – not everything called "wood" is really wood
One of the biggest differences between a good vanity and a standard one is the choice of materials:
- Natural wood, such as oak (our walnut tone is oak with a darker walnut-coloured varnish), gives depth and warmth, and lasts for years.
- HDF with a plywood core gives high structural stability, especially in humid conditions.
- Water-resistant two-component polyurethane (PU) paint, baked in an oven, protects the fronts and keeps them looking even in daily use.
This mix of natural materials and modern finishing is what lets Stonewood vanities hold up in busy, heavily used bathrooms.
3. A precise fit to your space and needs
No two bathrooms are the same. So a good vanity has to fit the room, not the other way round.
At Stonewood we make vanities in a wide range of widths, depths and heights, with options for:
- One, two or more drawers
- A mix of doors and drawers
- Changes to suit where the plumbing is, and a sit-on or inset sink
The result is a vanity that makes smart use of the space and feels as if it was designed just for you – because it was.
4. Top and sink – the pairing that makes the difference
A vanity does not stand on its own. The top and the sink have a direct effect on how it looks and how it is to use:
- A butcher-block wood top adds natural warmth
- Other matching tops are possible, such as Corian, depending on the design
- It can take a sit-on or an undermount sink
Planning the joins and proportions well gives you a vanity that lasts and looks neat and precise.
5. Don't compromise on hardware and finish
Small details make a big difference:
- Runners with soft-close
- Even paintwork with clean lines
- Hidden fixings and a careful finish
You don't always see these things at first glance – but you feel them every time you open and close a drawer.
In summary
A good vanity comes from good planning, quality materials and precise manufacturing. At Stonewood we make every vanity with daily use, humidity and modern design in mind – so you get a piece of furniture that looks great on the day it is installed, and is made to stay that way for years.
